CAREGIVER FACTS

Eliz&Mary.jpg

 Are You a Caregiver?

If so, you'll want to check into the following:

                       Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational program designed to provide caregivers with the tools they need in order to take care of themselves.  Click above for more information.

  • 21% of caregivers spend between five and ten hours a day providing care to a relative or friend.

  • Approximately 52 million people, equaling 31% of the adult population, provide care for an elderly, disabled, or chronically ill friend or relative.

  • 12% of these caregivers are 65 or older.

A Short Quiz for Determining

Whether or Not You Are a Caregiver

Are you providing continuous or frequent help to someone who is:

Older?

Physically or mentally disabled?

Experiencing chronic or progressive health issues?

Having difficulty with household or personal management?

Do you perform any of the following activities:

Take meals daily to a person who is shut-in?

Check on anyone regularly?

Give rides to medical or legal appointments, shopping, community activities, etc.?

Provide someone with around-the-clock personal care and supervision?

Assist an individual with any of the essential activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing?

If you answered YES to one or more of the above questions, YOU are a CAREGIVER!

And if you are a caregiver, you may find that the demands of the job are leaving you exhausted — or at risk of becoming exhausted!  If this is the case, you are in need of respite (temporary relief) from giving care.

Remember to:

Make time for yourself each day (even 30 minutes can make a difference).

Set aside a specific time and keep it for yourself!

Make sure you spend that time doing something you enjoy, not just another chore or "ought to."

There are many sources of help available to relieve you for specific time periods, such as:

In-Home Care

Adult Day Centers

Respite Care

Friends and Family

Members of your church, synagogue, mosque or temple
